During the first week of December, in conjunction with 567 Cape Talk and the Dischem Foundation we did some science fun events with children who would likely never have the opportunity of seeing our science fun parties in action.  At the first event, which took place at Prestwich Street Primary School, the 567 Cape Talk team attended and took part as well.  We sat on the floor in groups with the children, including Africa, John and Aden and we made slime!  It was huge fun.

We showed the children our Liquid Nitrogen experiment and got one of the children to *shrink* the balloon in Liquid Nitrogen, we discussed how the "air molecules are just like us, they spread out when they're hot and huddle together when they're cold".  Then we threw some Liquid Nitrogen on the floor in front of them, which made everyone shriek.  After some further experiments inside, we went outside and showed them how to make the rocket - we ended up making two rockets as everyone gathered around to see just how to do it - and we ended up with the Van Der Graaff Generator - a hair-raising demonstration indeed!

567 Cape Talk have put up a brilliant YouTube video of the event.  You will find the link in the next article.

We had the most amazing time, it truly was a rewarding and humbling experience.  We also send our grateful thanks to Bernd Sass at Bowler PET for the test tubes, Reece Harvey off Turner Plastics in Retreat for sponsoring the tubs for these events and Pick n Pay in Fish Hoek for providing us with the oil so that the children could make lava tubes and take them home with them.

At the end, the youngsters did not want to let us go, they kept hugging us and thanking us - and asking us to stay.  Who knows - we really hope that one day one of these little scientists might just end up being a scientist indeed.

2012 is the International Year of Chemistry and we are searching now for an individual, business or corporation who would sponsor us to take this into the schools next year.  Watching science in this fun, visual and tactile way is really the way to go, especially at Foundation Phase level.
